My father used to play "Waltzing Matilda" for us on his mandolin. We were living in a farmhouse in Ohio at the time, but the family had recently relocated from New Zealand, leaving cousins spread all over the globe from England to Australia to Canada. After a while we went from the corn fields to the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and my mother, who grew up in the windy hills beneath the south seas, now found herself in that mythical New York she'd only seen via the fake backdrops of Hollywood Musicals.
